about
When I was in high school, I had a good friend who was a photographer. She took amazing pictures. There is one in particular that I will never forget. It was a black and white picture of a guy with a garden hose. He was swinging the hose into the air causing the water to form drops. The picture froze every drop in mid air. I was actually there when she took the pic, and I think that is part of the reason why it had such an impact on me. The thing is, I was there. I witnessed the exact scene, but I didn’t see what the camera saw. I wanted to see what the camera saw.
In 1989 when I graduated, one of the gifts from my parents was a 35mm SLR. I started taking pictures. Unlike my friend I found that I didn’t like taking pictures of people, so I mostly took landscape pictures. Occasionally I was able to get some very good pictures, but I really had no idea what I was doing. The big problem was the disconnect.
When taking pictures with a film camera you have to buy film, and then you have to pay to get the film developed. This was a lot of spending, so I tended to shoot conservatively. In other words it would take me a while to go through a roll of film, and sometimes even longer to get the exposed rolls developed. The delay between exposure and finished picture created a huge disconnect. I could never remember what I did or didn’t do when I took the shot so I couldn’t learn what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong.
Ultimately the cost of working with film caused me to lose interest. I still took pictures, but I wasn’t passionate about it. Then in 2001 or so I bought my wife a digital camera. It was cheap and didn’t take great pictures, but my interest was starting to return. A few years later I picked a nicer cheap camera that took pretty decent pictures. I was finding the passion. I started keeping the camera with me all the time and taking lots of pictures.
I started putting pictures online and sharing them with friends. Some of them even mentioned wanting to get prints. I just liked taking pictures, so I was pretty blown away that other people liked what my camera saw.
Anyway, that brings us to this site. I decided I wanted to have a somewhat formal place to serve as a portal. I am going to make an attempt to add new pictures to this site on a regular basis, in a perfect world there will be a new picture here everyday.
Thanks for your interest,
